SafetyEd & Extension Cords

Extension cords are used in a lot of everyday life either at home or work. Although they can become very routine, they can also present hazards when used incorrectly or are worn out.

Two or Three Wire Extension Cords

There are either 2 or 3-wire extension cords. Two wire extension cords should only be used to operate one or two small appliances.

Three wire extension cords are made for outdoor usage and electrical power tools. The third wire on this cord a ground and should never be plugged into any ungrounded electrical outlets.

Grounded extension cords should only be used with power tools unless the tool is double insulated.

Construction sites require extension cords which are specified by the National Electric Code for hard usage or extra hard usage. The approved cords will be identified with either “outdoor” or “WA” on the jacket.

Care of Cords

All cords must be regularly inspected and treated with care. When the extension cord is in use it should have a clear set pathway. They should never be placed under rugs or furniture or strung through walls, windows, doorways, floors, etc. They can present shock hazards and potential fires if used incorrectly. When removing the extension cord, they should always be removed by the plug and not pulled out the outlet from a distance. If a cord is found to be damaged or deteriorated it is important to have it destroyed than replaced.

Extension cords should never be used as a replacement for permanent wiring or be fastened to a structure or building. It is important to avoid plugging two cords together to create a longer one. When the extension cords are connected or too long it will reduce the voltage and operating efficiency of tools, which can result in motor damages. Extension cords are at their best use when there is one continuous cord from receptacle to tool.

Extension cords are taken advantage of in everyday life for their convenience but still need the correct care and maintenance. Using these good practices talked about above, will keep extension cords from becoming tripping, fire, or shock hazards. All cords are to be inspected regularly and replaced when needed.
