Machine SafetyEd

In today’s world, there are so many advanced tools and machinery surrounding us.

With all the advancements in technology it leads to increased productivity, quality and more affordable production. When machines are used incorrectly, they can become as harmful as helpful. For example, there are machines that can punch through steel that are more than easily punch through flesh. Incidents such as the example can cause career-ending disabilities, pain and suffering.

Always be aware to these areas when operation or working in the area of machinery

Point of Operation:

The point of operation is where the force of the machine can cause a serious injury. This is where the pressing, cutting, and punching will take place. There should never be any part of the body in this surrounding area. This area may also produce fragments that fly around and sparks that may hit the operator. Safety glasses are also important or this type of work.

Power Train:

The power train is where the energy is transferred through moving parts. No body part should be in this area either. With all the gears, belts, cables, shafts and cylinders moving it is important that all lockout/tagout procedures are followed with all guards are replaced when repairs are completed. All employees should always report any missing guards to their supervisor before operating this equipment.

While always avoiding the power train and point of operation employees should also:

  • Have the appropriate lighting to see all spots of operation
  • Follow all lockout/tagout procedures
  • Not reach blindly into energized parts of the machine
  • Keep items such as watches, rings, belt buckles and steel away from exposed electrical parts
  • Before operations, assure that all machines are anchored securely to prevent movement that may become hazardous
  • Do not use wet hands to plug or unplug electrical equipment
  • Wear all the proper protective equipment for each job

Employees must be properly trained in the operations of the machinery before they can use it. Always be aware of danger zones in your work area and respect the power of machinery.
